And The Academy Award Goes To............

Macey!!!
For Best Drama

When Macey was taken to the recovery room she woke up almost immediately. She then popped right up and wouldn't lay down, she was looking for me and started getting upset so they came and got us right away.

We then had to meet some criteria Before we could go home. One of which we had to at least get 3-5oz of fluid in her. During this time is when I realized I was going to have a very high maintenance patient! We tried apple juice, Popsicles and then a slushy, she wanted no parts of any of it! I decided a little later it was going to be the slushy cause we were going home!

So the drama began..... She would take a little spoonful and I would say oh what a good girl then she would give a little cough sort of sound and I would say oh you poor baby, let me wipe your mouth(dabbing all around it, giving her lots of sympathy) you did so good you poor baby, then she would drop her head down and I would rock her saying that poor baby! Well this worked cause then she would pop her head right back up and point for more slushy so we could repeat the whole process over and over and over!! Bad news she still wants me to wipe her mouth today! The good news she could hear things all the way across the recovery room and would say mama.....and point and I would say yes that is a baby, or yes I hear it, etc...

For some reason I couldn't get the sound to work on the video so here is a little synopsis.

I gave Macey ice cream and the whole time I am up she is whiny MOM and says "ouch" after every bite. But once I sit down and give her sympathy and wipe her mouth that disappears only to reappear as soon as I get again! I also noticed that she said ouch a couple of times when she only touched her lips! Hmm, could this be drama ?

It makes it a bit challenging to figure out how much pain or how much drama is going on when you have a child who isn't very verbal. When I looked in her mouth it doesn't look very red or white it kind of looks the same as before. Not to mention she says ouch when she only puts the ice cream to her lips. Then there is the fact that I haven't allowed any lapse time with her pain meds!
Macey has been fairly cooperative when it has come to the liquids, she will even appease me a little bit when it comes to solids(soft ones of course). However when it comes to her meds defiance, stubbornness and pitiful looks have a whole new meaning!!

I have tried everything in order to make the dispensing of pain meds easier. I have put it in yogurt, juice and then finally I froze it with some Italian Ice and sometimes Popsicle which worked better than anything else except for the middle of the night dose (ever try to give a Ukrainian an ICY in the middle of the night?) When the hospital called to check on her they suggested chocolate syrup(THIS BOMBED BIG!) So far Ice Cream is about the only thing she will take orally without a lot of protesting. So I decide to mix ice cream, chocolate syrup and the pain med all in one and freeze that too! SUCCESS! So now I can alternate icy and ice cream.... pain killers!! I'm still not sure what we are going to do in the middle of the night!

Me: Macey you need to take your medicine.....

Macey: NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Me: It isn't a choice!

(This is the most pitiful face I have ever seen!)

The only time she gets those big crocodile tears and sad eyes is when she is truly heart broken, worried or in pain! (Her dramas and defiant moments are much different)

Poor Macey. I'm glad it is all over for her and she can hear again. Let's hope it lasts this time!
